Capitola Mall is the largest and only enclosed shopping center in
the Santa Cruz area. Typical of a beach community, you will find
a laid back experience without the crowds you'll find
elsewhere. Originally, the center only stretched from Sears to Kohl's,
but in the late Eighties, the center was expanded by adding
a new wing with Macy's, Gottschalks, and a food court.
Atmosphere
Much of this shopping center is clean and inviting.
Soft and comfortable seating areas can be found throughout. The
older wing features a large circular fountain for ambience and resting
tired feet. The newer wing is brighter and spacious with modern store
fronts and
architecture. On the negative side, the ceiling feels a little low
in places, especially in the older wing. In addition, the center
could benefit from adding skylights to bring in more natural light
and reduce artificial lighting needs. Finally, the penchant for maximizing
selling space has reduced the main corridors to a crowded number
of kiosk vendors, giving this center a cluttered interior.
Stores
Most of what you'll find here are national retailers,
such as Abercrombie & Fitch, The Limited, The Gap, and Coach.
Teens and young adults will appreciate the selection of stores that
cater to their needs. The department stores are smaller scale,
with limited offerings compared to the Silicon Valley. Mervyn's
closed the end of 2008, but will be replaced by Kohl's in September
2009.
A convenience center across the parking lot from
the old Mervyn's also offers a Ross Dress for Less.
Food
A sizeable food court, with a soft play area,
can be found between Macy's and Gottschalks. It features a number
of eateries for a quick
bite. For sit-down restaurants, try Chili's Grill and Bar or outside
the mall, Marie Callender's and Takara Japanese Restaurant.
Parking
Parking is fairly easy. During peak periods, the
lot along 41st Avenue can get busy. The lot near
the food court entrance is small and often full. Otherwise, park
near a department
store and use its entrance. A multi-level garage is available near
Gottschalks.
Location
Capitola Mall is located in Capitola, off Hwy
1 at 41st Avenue. After a short drive west, the shopping center is
on the right.
