BIGMallrat's Editorial Review
For over thirty years, Sun Valley mall (actually "Sunvalley Shopping Center") in Concord
has been an East
Bay tradition. Many years ago it included a food court, ice rink,
cinema, aviaries, and fountains. Now, none of those things remain,
but the focus is on mid to high end specialty shops.
Atmosphere
One thing you'll notice is that this mall is very
long. Before the outlawing of smoking in public places, I used to
say, "on a clear day, you can see Penney's from Sears!" The
lower level is actually underground. Before the remodel, small "portholes" were
the only openings from the upper level. It was quite claustrophobic.
However, the remodel in 1986 opened up the floors and made it white
and bright.
Stores
Sun Valley mall features a large selection of
stores, more than any other mall in the East Bay. You can find most
of what
you'll find at Stoneridge
mall, but more. The Macy's here is quite large for a suburban
location and has even grown with the opening of the Men's store in
the old Emporium-Capwell building. Other deparment stores include
JC Penney and Sears.
You'll also find an H&M
for trendy
women
and juniors. The men's and children's store is located in Broadway
Pointe in Walnut Creek.
Food
You won't find a food court here. Restaurants
and eateries are generally grouped around the entrances. Most offer
their own seating.
Parking
Sun Valley mall has numerous parking decks and
loads of parking. However, it's popularity makes it difficult to
find a close parking space. I prefer the garage near the Macy's Men's
store. I usually find a close spot on the second level. It appears
as if a local car dealership uses the third and fourth levels to
store cars, so that part of the garage is no longer available for
shoppers.
Location
Sun Valley mall is located in Concord CA, on the
west side of I-680 at Willow Pass Road. It's easy to spot from the
freeway.
In summary
Despite some gang-related problems or airport-related
hazards, this shopping center is still one of the best
malls in the Bay Area.
