BIGMallrat's Editorial Review
Bayfair Mall (now rebranded as Bayfair Center) in San Leandro has
been undergoing renovations slowly and methodically for the last
five years. The shopping center is beginning to take shape and perhaps
50-60% complete. Buildings have been realigned to create more of
a central corridor and a north entrance was removed. However, the
owner is still keeping the full renovation plan a secret, so we have
no idea what to expect.
Occupancy
Most of the remodeled areas of the center are
full of modern retailers. However, the corridor between Macy's and
Target is empty. Much of the second floor is devoted to the Western
Career College and devoid of any retailers. However, management has
reopened access to the entire second floor, which provides access
to the cinema. Nevertheless, the remodeling
seems to be paying off and the interior is bustling with people.
Stores
Since the renovation, many big-box style retailers
have joined the mix, including Kohl's, Bed Bath & Beyond,
Old Navy, and Staples.
A few national retailers and a number of local merchants occupy
the interior. Macy's could use a remodel, yet the Target is the best
in the area.
Outside the mall is the popular Century Theatres
16 Bayfair, PetSmart and 24 Hour Fitness.
Food
A newly remodeled food court is provided on the
first level between Macy's and Target. Replacing the older claustrophobic
food court, the new food court is open and dramatic, with pendant
lighting and modern colors. The elevator has been replaced with escalators
to the second level, leading right to the cinema across the parking
lot.
Location
Bayfair Center is located in San Leandro, CA.
It has no freeway visibility and may seem difficult to get to; much
to its detriment. However, take I-580 and exit west on Fairmont or
I-238 and exit north on Hesperian. A BART station with the same name
is a short walk away.
